Baby Carriers - 5 Reasons Why Baby Wearing Is So Popular

by Jen Stoddart

More and more moms and dads world-wide are doing it. Are you? Wearing your baby that is.

Baby slings and baby carriers are taking families by storm - they are the newest 'must have' baby gear. And leading the way are famous people like Brad and Angelina - they both wear baby carriers.

You can find them in all shapes and forms - the one you choose will depend on your lifestyle. They are fashionable, functional and built for comfort. You can choose a back frame carrier for outdoor adventures, a sling for out-and-about in the city, and a wrap style for being close to your baby.

The sale of baby carriers has grown in leaps and bounds in the past few years for a wide range of reasons. Here are 5 reasons why baby wearing is so popular - maybe you want to join the in-crowd?

1. Flexibility. Today's moms and dads are multi-taskers - they have to be to get everything done that they want to get done. It is hard to accomplish everything if you are holding your baby much of the day the old traditional way (that is, without a carrier). A carrier provides the flexibility to free your hands so that you can look after baby and at the same time accomplish other tasks.

2. Comfort. Baby carriers are comfortable for both the baby and for the parent carrying the child. Once you get used to wearing the carrier and see how comfortable they are to wear for you and your baby you will probably wear your carrier a fair bit. Today's modern carriers are ultra comfortable since they are designed to distribute weight across the shoulders and back of the person doing the carrying which greatly enhances the comfort.

3. Long period of use. Since a carrier can be used for a toddler (great on day-long adventures to the zoo) and they can also be used for newborns (depending on the type of carrier) people can get a long period of use from their carrier.

4. Soothing to baby. It's a well known fact that babies love to be held - holding them increases their contentment - and the more content the less they tend to cry. Carriers (especially sling and wrap styles) are built for holding baby close to you. It feels good for baby and it also feels good for you!

5. For moms that are breastfeeding their baby a sling carrier makes it easy to breastfeed anywhere with the confidence of knowing that the sling is providing mom and baby with privacy. Baby carriers that you can buy usually have a generous amount of fabric in the "hammock" where the baby is held so that it is very easy to breastfeed on both sides just by moving baby from one side to another without having to take baby out of the wrap

If you are a celebrity-watcher - and now a days who isn't then you'll know that movie stars, athletes and others of the famous set are wearing their babies in baby carriers. People are wearing the carriers because they look good - but more importantly because they are so practical and comfortable.

And it's not just mom anymore. More and more celebrity dads and the not-so-famous dads are getting in on the convenience and joy of carrying their child in a carrier.
